Sourdough Easter Bread Recipe

There’s something magical about baking bread for Easter morning—the kitchen filled with warm, sweet aromas, sunlight peeking through the window, and a soft, golden loaf waiting to be shared. Easter bread is more than just a recipe; it’s a tradition, often braided, slightly sweet, and sometimes decorated with colorful eggs to celebrate the joy of the season.

Ingredients:

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
  • ½ cup warm milk
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp lemon zest (optional, but adds a fresh flavor)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • Colored eggs (optional, for decoration)
  • Sprinkles (optional)

Instructions:

Start by waking up your yeast. In a small bowl, mix warm milk with sugar and yeast. Let it sit for about 5–10 minutes until it turns foamy—this means your bread will rise beautifully.

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, melted butter, eggs, vanilla, and lemon zest. Mix everything until a soft dough forms. Now comes the fun part—kneading. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8–10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size. This is the moment where patience pays off.

Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into three equal parts. Roll each piece into a long rope and braid them together. Shape it into a круг (round wreath) or leave it as a long braid—both look stunning. If you’re using colored eggs, gently tuck them into the braid.

Transfer your shaped dough onto a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Cover again and let it rise for another 30–40 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).

Before baking, brush the bread with a beaten egg for that glossy golden finish. Add sprinkles if you want a festive touch.

Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the bread turns beautifully golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.

Let it cool slightly before slicing. The inside will be soft, fluffy, and lightly sweet—perfect with a bit of butter or even enjoyed on its own.

Final Thoughts

This Easter bread isn’t just food—it’s a centerpiece, a memory-maker, and honestly, the kind of recipe that makes people gather around the table without being asked. Whether you’re baking it for family, friends, or just yourself, it brings that cozy, homemade feeling that store-bought bread just can’t match.
